Pierino Belli

Pierino Belli (born March  20, 1502 in Alba in Piedmont , †  December 31, 1575 in Turin ) was a high-ranking Piedmontese soldier and lawyer .

He acted as commander in chief of the troops of the Holy Roman Empire in Piedmont and was appointed State Councilor in 1560 by Emmanuel Philibert , Duke of Savoy . Three years later he published the work "De Re Militari et Bello Tractatus" ("Treatise on Military Affairs and Warfare"), which is considered to be one of the most comprehensive works of the time on military and martial law as well as an early work in the development of modern humanitarian law applies. Due to its legal historical relevance, new editions of the book were published in 1936, 1964 and 1995.

In his native town of Alba, Via Pierino Belli, a street was named after him.
