Jan de Baen (born March 20, 1633 in Haarlem , † before March 8, 1702 , probably in The Hague ) was a Dutch portrait painter.

Life

Jan de Baen was a student of the painter Jacob Adriaensz. Backer . At the same time, he also copied several works by Anthony van Dyck in order to study him. Through these studies, the English King Charles II became aware of de Baen and invited him to London .

De Baen later returned to the Netherlands and settled in The Hague. Presumably he died there on March 8, 1702, at the age of almost 69.

De Baen soon achieved his artistic breakthrough through his portraits . Over time, the most distinguished people sat as models for him, among others he also worked for the Brandenburg Great Elector Friedrich Wilhelm , for whom he made a portrait of his wife, the Electress Dorothea von Holstein-Glücksburg, in 1675 .
