Irmgard
Irmgard (in variants including Irmengard , Irmingard , Ermengarde ) is a female given name .

The name comes from the Old High German ermin / irmin "large", "powerful" and gard "protection" (cf. etymology of the word garden )

The name Irmgard was one of the ten most common girls' names in Germany from the mid-1910s to the mid-1930s. Its popularity declined in the forties, and the name has hardly been used since the late 1950s.

variants
The origin of the name is particularly evident in the older variants of the name, which include Ermengard (e) , Irmengard and Irmingard . The mostly medieval name-bearers sometimes show several spellings for the same people. The Latinized form was achieved by adding the suffix -is , for example in Irmengardis von Aspel . A less common male form is also known: Ermengardus, for example in Hermangard d'Asp .
The shorter forms Irmgard (the most common form today), but also Ermgard and Armgard , are often more recent. The variant Ehrengard is also modern, it can be both a corrupted form of Ermengard, as well as a parallel formation with honor .
There are numerous abbreviations and nicknames that are only formed with the first part of the name ermin / irmin and can therefore go back to Irmgard, Irmtraud or Irmhilde. These include Erma , Irma , Irmchen, Irmi, Irmine, Irmela and Imke .
The name Irmgart is rarely spelled with t at the end.
