Hermangard d'Asp also Ermengard, Ermengardus Apsensis, Armengaut de Aspe († winter 1192 in Akkon ) was from 1187 to 1190 the ninth Grand Master of the Order of St. John . He only led this office on a provisional basis, as he was not regularly elected, but is now a Grand Master in the order.

Defensive battle against Saladin

After his predecessor Roger de Moulins was killed in the Battle of Cresson in May 1187, the Order of St. John was confronted with an invasion of Sultan Saladin on the Kingdom of Jerusalem . Initially, Wilhelm Borel had temporarily taken over the leadership of the order, but he probably fell in the battle of Hattin on July 4, 1187 or was captured and executed by Saladin's troops there. In any case, on July 20, 1187, Hermangard d'Asp took over command of the Order of St. John in Jerusalem until further notice.

While Saladin conquered numerous cities and castles of the kingdom, the Johanniter took shelter in their mighty Ordensburg Margat , which they had only acquired in February 1186. On October 22, 1187, Jerusalem fell into the hands of Saladin after a ten-day siege . The Order of St. John bought 1,000 of the Christians imprisoned in Jerusalem out of its fortune.

The order took part in the siege of Acre and, after the successful reconquest, moved the seat of the order there. When the order had consolidated again to some extent during the siege of Acon, a new Grand Master was regularly elected in 1189 or 1190 with Garnier de Naplouse and Hermangard was replaced. The Order also zealously participated in the Third Crusade , bearing the brunt of the 1191 victorious Battle of Arsuf against Saladin.

Hermangard died in Acre in the winter of 1192.
