Irmgard Merkt (born April 7, 1946 in Munich ) is a German music teacher .

Biographical

Irmgard Merkt first studied opera singing and later music for teaching at grammar schools at the State University of Music in Munich. After a few years of teaching at high school in the Ruhr area, in 1978 she became a research assistant to her later doctoral supervisor Werner Probst at the Pädagogische Hochschule Ruhr . 1983 doctorate it with the dissertation German-Turkish music teaching in the Federal Republic. From 1979 to 1990 Merkt was an academic adviser at the University of Dortmund in the field of music education for the disabled and from 1990 to 1992 professor in media education - with a focus on social education - at the University of Applied Sciences Dortmund . Music and inclusion projects

InTakt, Europa InTakt and InTakt sponsorship award

One focus of Merkt's commitment is music and inclusion . In 1998 she initiated the InTakt training program in which people with and without disabilities play music together and learn from one another. When the Ruhr area became European Capital of Culture in 2010, it developed an international format: Europa InTakt.

She is a juror and co-initiator of the Miriam Foundation's InTakt award for inclusive music projects.

Dortmund model: Music (Domo)

In the Dortmund Model: Music project, from 2010 to 2013 she developed new structures for musical education for people with disabilities - from basic musical education to professionalization in inclusive ensembles.

Network culture and inclusion

Even after her retirement in 2014, Merkt continues to work in the field of music and inclusion. For example, she initiated the culture and inclusion network, which has been funded by the Federal Commissioner for Culture and Media Monika Grütters since 2015. This nationwide specialist and dialogue forum reflects on and expands previous approaches to the participation of people with disabilities in cultural life and shows equal opportunities for diverse and active access to the cultural landscape.

Award

On September 10, 2016, the State Music Council of North Rhine-Westphalia awarded Irmgard Merkt the Silver Tuning Fork for her commitment to the participation of disabled people in the musical life of North Rhine-Westphalia.
