Martin Geck

Martin Geck (born March 19, 1936 in Witten ; † November 22, 2019 in Bochum ) was a German musicologist .

Martin Geck grew up in a Protestant rectory in Recklinghausen . His father Wilhelm (1892–1989) was a member of the Confessing Church , pastor of the Gustav Adolf Church in Recklinghausen and from 1949 to 1961 superintendent of the Recklinghausen church district. Martin Geck passed his Abitur in 1955 at the Petrinum grammar school in Recklinghausen. He then studied musicology , theology and philosophy in Münster , Berlin and Kiel . The doctorate followed in 1962. In 1966 he became the founding editor of the Richard Wagner Complete Edition. In 1970 he worked as a lecturer in a school book publisher, subsequently as the author of numerous music textbooks. In 1974 he became a private lecturer and, in 1976, a full professor of musicology at the University of Dortmund , where he retired in 2001.

Geck wrote many papers on the history of German music in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries; but also music education and music therapy were his interests. Most recently, Geck was mainly active in Bach research and was the initiator of the Dortmund Bach Symposia. His work Beethoven. The creator and his universe was nominated for the Leipzig Book Fair Prize in the non-fiction category in 2018 .

Geck was a member of the scientific advisory board of the critical complete edition of all works by Johann Rosenmüller .
