Bessie Becker

Bessie Becker (* 1919 in Grünstadt ; † January 4/5, 1971 in Kitzbühel , actually Irmgard Elisabeth Schulte ) was a German fashion designer , advertising designer, fashion photographer and costume designer .

Life

Becker was initially a costume designer at the Münchner Kammerspiele after 1945 . Between 1941 and 1959 she manufactured a. a. the costumes for numerous German films of the war and post-war period.

In 1952, Becker founded her own fashion house in Munich, initially for teenage fashion, and later for prêt-à-porter . She was one of the few couturières who asserted themselves in the male-dominated industry at the time and gained fame beyond the borders of Germany.

On the night of January 4th to 5th, 1971, Becker suffered a heart attack in Kitzbühel, fell over a fence and was only found frozen 10 hours later. The temperatures in Kitzbühel at that time were minus 15 degrees Celsius , an autopsy ruled out third-party fault . According to her agency, Becker had been suffering from heart disease for a long time.

Becker was married to the painter, draftsman and graphic artist Helmar Becker-Berke .

Garments designed and sewn by her in 1963 are in the collection of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg.
