The Guelph Countess Palatine Irmengard near Rhine - also known as Irmengard von Baden (* around 1200 ; † February 24, 1260 ) - was the wife of Margrave Hermann V of Baden . She brought the property of the city of Pforzheim into the marriage, which then remained with Haus Baden until 1918 .

She was the daughter of Heinrich I bei Rhein , the Duke of Braunschweig , called the Tall One, and granddaughter of Heinrich the Lion .

She and her husband are known as patrons of the monasteries in Maulbronn , Tennenbach , Herrenalb , Selz , Salem and the Abbey of Backnang . Irmengard near Rhine is considered to be the founder of the Lichtenthal monastery in Lichtental near Baden-Baden in 1245 , later the burial place of the margraves. However, she took over the construction of the monastery and then needed the help of her sons to finance it. In March 1245 she was given some goods and rights.

“The brothers Hermann and Rudolph, Margraves of Baden, handed over to their mother Irmengard, who, for the salvation of her deceased husband, Margrave Hermann von Baden, and to remedy her sins, had started building a convent near Beuren near Baden, but not had sufficient funds for this, the patronage right of the churches in Ettlingen and Baden , their tithes in Iffezheim (deciman, que nobis cedit aqud Vffinshein), the villages of Winden and Beuren with all their accessories, two farms in Oos , one in Eberstein and twelve pounds Strasbourg coin of their interest in Selz . ” Source: GLA

The brothers gave away more than they owned, because the brothers themselves lent two parts of the tithe to Ludwig von Liebenzell , which led to long disputes.

Irmengard married Hermann V. von Baden around 1217, the marriage with Hermann V. had the following children:

  • Hermann (* around 1225 - † October 4, 1250); later ruling margrave
  • Rudolf (around 1230 - November 19, 1288); later ruling margrave
  • Mechthild († 1259) ∞ (April 4, 1251) Count Ulrich I of Württemberg (* around 1222; † February 25, 1265), named the founder.
  • Elisabeth
  1. ∞ Count Eberhard von Eberstein
  2. Ludwig II of Lichtenberg .

In 1248 Irmengard transferred her husband's corpse from the Augustinian canons of Backnang to Lichtental to the Lichtenthal monastery .
