Koblenz Carnival
The Koblenz Carnival , also known as the Kowelenz Faasenacht , is the name of the carnival festival celebrated in the city of Koblenz . The Koblenz Carnival celebrates the Rhenish Carnival and has been included in the nationwide register of intangible cultural heritage within the meaning of the Convention for the Preservation of Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO .
The principle:
- Let's stick to the custom
- mindful of character
- that the world can only shape
- who preserves the values
procedure
The fifth season in Koblenz begins, as in all Rhenish carnival strongholds, on the eleventh eleventh at eleven eleven with kick-off events. The rehearsals of the dance groups, the rehearsal of the handmade paper speeches and the intensive car building usually last the whole year. With numerous ceremonial meetings and masked balls organized by the local carnival and Möhnen societies, the “Kowelenzer Schängelcher ” get in the mood for the carnival week from heavy Thursday / Weiberfastnacht to Ash Wednesday . On Rose Monday , the Rose Monday procession through Koblenz's old town takes place. However, some parts of the city also organize their own carnival parades on Carnival Sunday, and some of the participants with their floats also take part in the Rose Monday parade in the city center.
history
For the first time guaranteed by the Cistercian monk Caesarius von Heisterbach , the carnival hustle and bustle took place on the corner from the 13th century ; however, in the first few centuries under the gaze of strict church representatives. The prosperity that came with the Renaissance also changed the carnival: the fooling became more secular. From the 16th century on, the inn with the alcohol and no longer the church was the focus of foolish activities.
The religiously motivated carnival was finally buried with the outbreak of the Thirty Years' War . Despite destruction, pillage and death, the Koblenz Carnival in 1688 managed to return to the city, which was now shaped by modern times. Splendor and electoral splendor determined its character until the city was handed over to Napoleonic France . From 1797 on, the ideas of the French Enlightenment determined social coexistence.
With it, the terms freedom, equality and brotherhood ( liberté, egalité, fraternité ) entered the carnival. The previously aristocratic carnival has now become a purely bourgeois event. Napoleon's defeat and the rise of Prussia mark another, probably the most important, section of the Koblenz carnival history: the carnival reform of 1823 that started in Cologne . The result of this reform was the institutionalization of the Koblenz carnival in 1824 and numerous associations being founded. Following this example, the whole Rhineland was celebrated with a different motto: " How we celebrate shows how we are ".
Bourgeois obstinacy and the will to organize themselves were already at odds with Prussian reasons of state, which paralyzed the further development of the fifth season at the beginning of the 19th century. Although the people of Koblenz managed to organize their first carnival parade in 1827, the freedom to organize the event soon reached its bureaucratic limits. Kulturkampf and striving for democracy - at this time also carnival themes.
It was only after 1860 that the fools and the authorities began to relax. The carnival in Koblenz experienced a renewed but by no means permanent revival. The Koblenz Carnival was repeatedly interrupted by political crises (such as the Five Years War ) and by the lack of interest that arose around the turn of the century. But the carnival was also of economic and tourist importance. And so the foolish goings-on in Koblenz received an additional impetus during the 1920s. Interrupted by the Second World War , interest has grown to the present day.
Since the 1971/1972 session, Koblenz has had a couple of madmen, a “prince” and his lady Confluentia “”, who previously only walked separately through the halls and took part in the Koblenz carnival. Carnival princes have existed in the Faasenacht in Kowelenz since the end of the 1820s, the figure of the lady "Confluentia" since 1959 and 1964.
In 2007, the carnival kicked off on November 10th due to a bomb found. The ten hundredweight bomb was defused on November 11th and therefore downtown Koblenz was closed.
Working Group Koblenz Carnival (AKK)
Most of the Koblenz carnival societies have fraternized and are part of the Koblenz Carnival Association (AKK) e. V. merged. This working group, AKK for short , emerged in the early 1960s from the working committee and finally the interest group of the Koblenz carnival clubs. Already early after the Second World War (1948), the experts of the Rhein-Mosel-Stadt agreed: If a new start with the customs, then only if the matter is managed by an umbrella organization. The people of Koblenz are rightly of the opinion that the interests of the individual who is a member of this committee, the later community, can only be promoted through the cooperation of all associations. That is why the statutes say: This is the only way to organize the old local folk festival.
The purpose of the AKK is to promote local customs, the Moselle-Franconian dialect and the popular carnival. She organizes:
- the session opening on 11.11. at 11:11 am,
- the selection of the prince-presenting society, from which Prince Carnival and Dame Confluentia are placed in the session / campaign,
- the enthronement of the foolish madnesses (Prince and Confluentia) in early January,
- the event for people with handicaps in the Rhein-Mosel-Halle,
- the implementation and organization of the AKK Schängelschiffe on a ship of the Cologne-Düsseldorfer Schifffahrtsgesellschaft with over 1500 carnivalists (formerly the foolish Schängel-Express with the Deutsche Bahn AG); In the 2010 session, the AKK Schängelschiff sailed for the first time on two consecutive days due to the great demand,
- storming the Bundeswehr (formerly of the III Corps) and swearing in the guards,
- the traditional wine market on Carnival Sunday and Rose Monday, the key handover by the Lord Mayor of Koblenz,
- the organization and control of the Rose Monday procession,
- the award ceremony for the most beautiful foot groups, motif wagons and committee wagons (plus special prizes),
- as well as the implementation of the AKK morning pint in the Koblenz wine village before the summer holidays.
