Thomas Stafford Cardinal Williams ONZ , ChStJ (born March 20, 1930 in Wellington , New Zealand ) is Archbishop Emeritus of Wellington .

Life

Thomas Stafford Williams studied Catholic theology , philosophy , economics and social sciences in Wellington, Rome and Dublin . In 1959 he received the sacrament of ordination . After further studies , he received his doctorate in sociology in 1962 .

He then worked in New Zealand as a parish minister and in priest training. From 1971 to 1975 he served as a missionary in Western Samoa , and from 1976 to 1979 he was pastor of the Holy Family Congregation in Wellington.

In 1979 he became Archbishop of Wellington. Four years later, it took Pope John Paul II. As cardinal priest with the titular church of Gesù Divin Maestro alla Pineta Sacchetti into the College of Cardinals on. Since 2001 he has been a member of the Council of Cardinals for the Study of Organizational and Economic Problems of the Holy See.

On March 21, 2005, he resigned from his position as Archbishop of Wellington and on April 1, 2005 as Military Bishop of New Zealand. He participated in the 2005 conclave , in which Benedict XVI. was chosen to participate.
