John Atcherley Cardinal Dew (born May 5, 1948 in Waipawa , New Zealand ) is a New Zealand clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Wellington .

Life

John Dew studied at Holy Name Seminary - Seminary of Christ Church philosophy and at the Holy Cross College of Catholic Theology . He received on May 9, 1976, the sacrament of Holy Orders by Reginald Cardinal Delargey . He was pastor in the parish of St. Joseph in Upper Hutt (1976–1979) and in the diocese of Rarotonga (1980–1982). From 1983 to 1987 he was diocesan youth pastor and also responsible for the Cook Islands Maori community . From 1988 to 1991 he taught at Holy Cross College in Mosgiel. After postgraduate studies in Spirituality at the Institute of St. Anselm in Kent, UK, he was parish priest of St. Anne in Newtown from 1993 to 1995.

On 1 April 1995 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To auxiliary bishop in Wellington and titular Bishop of Privata . The episcopal ordination donated him Thomas Stafford Cardinal Williams on May 31 of the same year; Co- consecrators were Denis George Browne , Bishop of Hamilton , and Peter James Cullinane , Bishop of Palmerston North . On May 24, 2004, Pope John Paul II appointed John Atcherley Dew Coadjutor Archbishop of Wellington. With the acceptance of the age-related resignation of his predecessor on March 21, 2005, he succeeded him as Archbishop of Wellington. On April 1, 2005, he was also appointed Military Bishop of New Zealand .

Dew is President of the Federation of Catholic Bishops' Conferences of Oceania (FCBCO). He advocates the admission of remarried divorced people to communion .

Since the Archdiocese of Wellington is a bishopric traditionally associated with the cardinal dignity , Dew has since been considered a candidate for the cardinalate. In the consistory of February 14, 2015, Pope Francis created him cardinal and appointed him cardinal priest with the titular church of Sant'Ippolito .

Since October 4, 2019, he has also been Apostolic Administrator of the vacant diocese of Palmerston North .
