Armando Soto La Marina ( Luis Armando Velázquez de León y Soto la Marina ; born October 1, 1909 in Victoria de Durango , † March 20, 1983 in Mexico City , known as El Chicote ) was a Mexican actor.

El Chicote began a career as a novillero in bullfighting in his youth , which he gave up after an accident. In 1924 he made his debut as a comedian in the Carpa Mariposa . His success as a vaudeville actor led to the fact that the short film Los apuros del chicote was shot with him in 1937 . In the following years he worked on numerous films alongside actors such as Jorge Negrete , Raúl de Anda , Pedro Armendáriz , Pedro Infante , Luis Aguilar , and later Antonio Aguilar and Manuel López Ochoa .

In 1946 he had a serious car accident in which he suffered head injuries and a nervous shock. In the late 1970s he went on a hunger strike before the Asociación Nacional de Actores (ANDA) on the grounds that the film producers had forgotten him. In the 1980s he made several successful films again with Maria Elena Velasco, among others . The ANDA awarded him medals for the 25th and 50th film anniversaries, and he was also honored in the USA, Central and South America. His work includes more than 120 productions.
