The international airport of the Seychelles archipelago is located on the main island of Mahé near the capital Victoria and is the state's only international airport in the Indian Ocean. The airport has two official names, one is Seychelles International Airport (English) and the other is Aéroport International de Seychelles (French), as both languages are official languages in the Seychelles.
Runway 31 has an ILS approach and runway 13 has a VOR approach. The ILS approach to runway 31 does not meet the ICAO specifications for a precision approach due to the obstacle situation and is therefore categorized as a non-precision approach.
The airport is the hub for the national airline Air Seychelles .
history
On March 20, 1972, the British Queen Elizabeth II opened the archipelago's international airport, which was then called Mahé Airport . The opening was one of the biggest events in the island state. The airport became necessary because the weekly ferry connection to Mombasa via Madagascar was no longer sufficient.
In the same year, John Faulkner Taylor founded the Seychelles' first airline, which was called Air Mahé , and stationed several small planes at the new airport near Victoria. The airport has been continuously expanded since July 1980, as passenger traffic and freight volumes have increased significantly in recent years. An additional terminal for domestic traffic to Praslin and La Digue was also built alongside a cargo terminal. Since the expansion, the domestic terminal has been accessible on foot for all transit passengers from the international terminal.
A tram line to the capital Victoria is planned.
aims
Air Seychelles connects the Seychelles with some international destinations in Africa and Asia . There are code share agreements with Air France , Interair South Africa and Condor . In addition, only Air Seychelles starts to Praslin or Bird Island and is therefore the only airline for domestic traffic.
Other airlines that fly to Seychelles airport are:
- Air Austral to Réunion
- Condor flight service to Frankfurt am Main
- Meridiana to Milan
- Kenya Airways to Nairobi
- Neos to Milan
- Edelweiss Air to Zurich
- Ethiopian Airlines to Addis Ababa
- Emirates to Dubai
- Qatar Airways to Doha
- Etihad Airways for Air Seychelles to Abu Dhabi , Johannesburg and Mauritius (see article Air Seychelles )
