Gordian Troeller
Gordian Troeller (born March 16, 1917 in Pierrevillers , Lorraine , † March 22, 2003 in Hamburg ) was a Luxembourg journalist , photographer and documentary filmmaker .
Life
Troeller attended primary school in France, then a high school in Luxembourg. Before graduating from high school, he left school and home to join the left in the Spanish Civil War .
After a brief but decisive experience in the Spanish civil war, he fled the Germans from Luxembourg to Portugal in 1940. There, with the support of the Allies, he set up a secret service which, among other things, set up an escape line. This made it possible for people persecuted by the Nazis to flee to Portugal from the areas occupied by the Germans. After the war he worked as a correspondent for various newspapers, mainly in Iran and the Middle East.
Since 1960 he and his French colleague Marie-Claude Deffarge have made a name for themselves in the Federal Republic of Germany through extraordinary text and photo reports in Stern magazine . In the late 1960s, he began filming alongside newspaper reports. From 1974 he had a permanent place in the ARD . In three series, which he produced exclusively for Radio Bremen (In the Name of Progress, Women of the World, Children of the World), he made 70 documentaries. His commitment was the analysis of the economic and socio-political structures that underlie the social injustices and thus the increasing impoverishment of large parts of the world population - whether in the highly developed industrial nations or in the so-called developing countries.
