Joseph Orbeli
Joseph Orbeli ( Armenian Հովսեփ Օրբելի , Howsep Orbeli; Russian Иосиф Абгарович Орбели Iossif Abgarowitsch Orbeli; * March 8th July / March 20, 1887 greg. In Kutaisi , Russian Empire ; † February 2, 1961 in Lenetian -Armenian) was a Soviet Orientalist and director of the Hermitage Art Museum from 1934 to 1951.
Life
The son of an old aristocratic Armenian family grew up with his older brother Leon Orbeli near Saint Petersburg . In 1914 he became a university professor there. Orbeli was mainly concerned with the history of the South Caucasus in the Middle Ages and undertook excavations in Ani and Bagaran . Together with Nikolai Marr he undertook excavations in Toprakkale near Van. As director of the Hermitage, he expanded the oriental collections and steered the art museum through the difficult period of Stalinism . Mikhail Artamonov succeeded him in office as museum director . Orbeli founded the Armenian Academy of Sciences in 1943 and was its first president until 1947. In the Nuremberg trials he appeared on the 65th day as a witness for the destruction of the castles around Leningrad ( Catherine Palace in Pushkin , Peterhof ).
