Arthur Knautz

Arthur Knautz (born March 20, 1911 in Daaden im Westerwald, † August 6, 1943 in Belgorod in Russia ) was a German field handball player . He was the captain of the German field handball team from 1936, which won the gold medal at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin .

The trained carpenter from Daaden , married to Erna Späth from Biersdorf since 1936 , was initially active in sports in the Daaden gymnastics club and as a soccer goalkeeper. When he joined the Reichswehr , he found his way to handball. There, based in East Westphalia, he became a member of the MSV Hindenburg Minden . This club was able to win several Westphalian and German championship titles in the 1930s . In 1935, he was called up for the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. He led the German team there as team captain to win the gold medal, which was secured on August 14, 1936 with a 10: 6 victory over Austria.

In addition to handball, Knautz also achieved impressive records in athletics in the high jump (1.75 meters), long jump (almost seven meters), javelin throw (41.76 meters) and discus throw (32.17 meters).

During the Second World War he was used as a soldier in Russia and has been missing there since 1943. In Daaden there is a sports hall named after him: the Arthur-Knautz-Halle. Some of his descendants still live in Daaden.
