Johann Gottlieb von Langen (born October 25, 1858 in Cologne , † March 20, 1940 at Zieverich Castle ) was a German industrialist.

Life

Johann Gottlieb von Langen was the oldest son of Eugen Langen from his first marriage to Henriette Thurneysen. He attended high school and the provincial trade school in Cologne. Subsequently studied at the University of Bonn. In 1879 he became a member of the Corps Hansea Bonn . After graduating, he gained professional experience in domestic and foreign sugar factories, including one year in the United States . On October 2, 1884, he married Ida Maria Adele Wilhelmina (Minna) vom Rath, who came from the von Rath banking family in Cologne. In 1886 he became a partner in Pfeifer & Langen and, in 1926, after its transformation into a stock corporation, chairman of the supervisory board. He was deputy chairman of the supervisory board of the Rheinische Aktienverein für Zuckerfabrikation. In 1920 he sold the Palais von Langen, built from 1882 to 1886 on behalf of his father to a design by Cologne architect Hermann Otto Pflaume , at Von-Werth-Strasse 14 in Cologne, to Robert Gerling , who had it converted for office purposes for the Gerling Group.

Although his main economic activity was devoted to the German sugar industry , von Langen belonged to the supervisory bodies of numerous commercial banks, insurance companies and industrial companies in other sectors. He was chairman of the supervisory board of A. Schaaffhausen'schen Bankverein and later a member of the supervisory board of Deutsche Bank and Disconto-Gesellschaft . He was deputy chairman of the supervisory board of the Rheinisch-Westfälische Boden-Credit-Bank , the Colonia Kölnischen Feuer- und Unfallversicherungs-AG , the Rückversicherungs-AG Colonia, the Kölnische Hagelversicherungs-Gesellschaft, the Rheinisch-Westfälische Revisions-Treuhand AG and the Humboldt-Deutz- Motors AG . He was also a member of the supervisory boards of Phoenix AG for mining and smelting , the Cologne-Neuessener Bergwerkverein, the Mannesmannröhren-Werke , the United Steelworks van der Zypen and Wissener Eisenhütten AG, the Motorenfabrik Oberursel AG, the Continental Society for electrical companies, the Elektricitäts -AG vorm. Schuckert & Co. , the German-Atlantic Telegraph Company , the Schlesisch-Kölnische Lebensversicherungsbank AG, the German-East African Society , the Cologne Tattersall AG and the Association of German Sugar Refineries GmbH.

Von Langen was a member of the board of directors of the Association of the German Sugar Industry and the Cologne Chamber of Commerce and Industry . He was a member of the board of directors of the Association of Industrialists of the Cologne District, the Committee of the Deutsches Museum , the Administrative Council of the Cologne Heilstättenverein and Vice President of the Cologne Racing Association.

Von Langen was captain of the Landwehr cavalry.
