Johann Sagittarius
Johann Sagittarius (also: Schütz ; * March 20, 1531 in Halle (Saale) ; † July 24, 1584 in Wittenberg ) was a German Lutheran theologian.
Life
Sagittarius studied since March 31, 1545 at the University of Wittenberg and on August 14, 1550 acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy. After completing his theological studies in Wittenberg, he was ordained as a pastor in Doberlug on January 3, 1554 in Wittenberg .
On April 1, 1555 he was Monday preacher at Freiberg Cathedral and in 1556 archdeacon at St. Peterskirche in Freiberg . There he got into the theological disputes associated with the Leipzig Articles , where he represented the position of the Gnesiolutherans . His opponents, the Philippists , saw to it that he was dismissed as pastor in Freiberg and imprisoned at Hohenstein Castle on June 13, 1566 . After a few weeks' imprisonment, his case was examined by Elector August , who determined his innocence and released him from prison.
Since his position in Freiberg was filled, he went to Lübben in Lusatia, where he found a job as an official . After the Gnesiolutherans had regained the upper hand in Saxony with the Torgau articles , he became superintendent in Annaberg in 1574 and was involved in the convent of Elector Augustus in Lichtenberg in 1576 when the Book of Concords was being discussed.
In 1577 he became professor of theology at the Wittenberg University and preacher at the Wittenberg Castle Church . He was in the winter semester of the same year rector of the alma mater , graduated on October 17, 1580 licentiate of theology, became provost of the Castle Church and Chancellor of the University. On June 16, 1584 he received his doctorate in theology. However, he did not get any special activity afterwards, as he died shortly afterwards. An epitaph was erected for him at the Wittenberg Castle Church.
