Monique Kavelaars

Monique Kavelaars (born March 20, 1971 in Appin , Ontario ) is a Canadian fencer .

Kavelaars was voted Miss Teen Canada in 1989. She began her sporting career as a modern pentathlete . It was only at the age of 17 that she began to concentrate exclusively on fencing.

Kavelaars celebrated her greatest successes as a member of the Canadian national degna team. At the Pan American Games in Winnipeg in 1999 , she won the silver medal with the team.

In 2004 the team qualified for the Summer Olympics in Athens for the first time and surprisingly reached fourth place in the line-up of Monique Kavelaar, Sherraine Mackay and Julie Leprohon . In the individual competition, Kavelaars won against South African Rachel Barlow in the first round , but then lost to Chinese Li Na in the last 32 and was eliminated.
