Ian William Murray (born March 20, 1981 in Edinburgh , Scotland ) is a former Scottish football player and current coach. Murray was very versatile in his active career and was therefore used in a number of positions. Most of the time, the Scot played in central defense or in defensive midfield. After the end of his playing career, he became a coach.

Career as a player

In 1999 he joined the professional team of his home club Hibernian Edinburgh . The following year it was awarded to Alloa Athletic and returned to Hibernian in 2001 after only two appearances for Alloa. His first appearance in the UEFA Cup took place on September 20, 2001 in a 2-0 away defeat against AEK Athens . In the 2004/05 season he was the captain of Hibernian until he moved to one of the two strongest clubs in the Scottish League , the Glasgow Rangers , in 2005 . He made his UEFA Champions League debut on 13 September in a 3-2 home win for Rangers against FC Porto in the group stage. Murray missed the entire first half of his second season (2006/07) with the Rangers because of Reiter's disease , and in the second half of the season he did not find his way back to his old form before the illness. In 2007 he moved to England for Norwich City , where he made his debut against Hull City on August 25, 2007 . Murray also had health problems at Norwich City and played very rarely. In 2008 he returned to his first club Hibernian Edinburgh and stayed there until 2012. He was then a year under contract with Brechin City , but came only to one use. For the 2013/14 season he moved to the second-rate FC Dumbarton . His last game was on December 4, 2013, a 1-1 draw against his former club Alloa Athletic. In the summer of 2014, Murray ended his career as a player.

National team

Murray was the captain of the Scottish U-21s . He made his debut for the senior national team in the 3-1 win over Canada in October 2002. It was not until two years later in October 2004 that Murray played his second game for Scotland when he defeated Moldova in the qualifier for the 2006 World Cup with a 1: 1 tie was used for one half. Murray had his first game from the start against Belarus , which was lost 1-0. In total, Murray completed six games for Scotland.

Career as a coach

Murray began his coaching career at FC Dumbarton on November 22, 2012. He worked there until May 2015 and then moved to FC St. Mirren , which he left in December. There followed a time as an assistant coach under his compatriot Kevin Nicol at the Norwegian third division Asker Fotball . Since October 19, 2018, he has been the head coach of the Scottish club FC Airdrieonians .
