Zoner Photo Studio is graphics software developed by the Czech company Zoner Software. The image processing and management program is one of the most common programs in the Czech Republic for processing digital photos and is used worldwide. It is available for the Windows and Android operating systems.

history

In 1993 the company Zoner Inc. was founded by a small group of photography enthusiasts under the then name Zoner Software . The software was originally released under the name Zoner Media Explorer . In 2004 it was renamed Zoner Photo Studio , since from then on the main focus was on digital photography . A new version of the software is released every year.

Important changes in previous versions

In version 12, Zoner Photo Studio introduced the separation of the program into the various modules Manager , Viewer , Editor and RAW in order to enable effective, simultaneous work in image management and processing. With this version, the anthracite-colored surface was also introduced, which should enable the user to work without getting tired. Version 13 introduced support for dual monitors and a 64-bit version for Windows. In version 14, the developers presented the online gallery Zonerama and the GPU acceleration through CUDA and OpenCL .

The new import module was introduced with version 15. Version 16 brought the final change to the sidebar in the editor. In version 17 the RAW module has been completely revised and the catalog has been assigned a central position in the manager. Version 18 has a simplified and clearer user interface that offers more space for viewing photos. In this version there are three modules with unified editing processes: Manager, Develop and Editor. ZPS 18 offers non-destructive image processing and a modified catalog.

surface

Zoner offers a complete package of tools for the entire photographic workflow, not just for image processing. The interface is divided into so-called modules, each of which takes on a main task (processing or administration) within the workflow.

Manager module: image management

The manager module is responsible for image management. It shows so called metadata , i. H. Image information that is stored in the Exif , IPTC and / or XMP standards . This metadata can contain image titles, descriptions, information about the author, keywords, audio comments, digital signatures, GPS data, ratings, colored markings, etc. In the manager, metadata can be edited, managed and used for filtering and sorting. The module supports batch processing. The program works directly with the image files on the hard disk; these are not first imported and then exported later. The catalog database included in the program acts as a memory for the quick search of metadata. The manager offers several different views besides the standard browser view: preview, map and comparison.

Editor: image processing

The editor is intended for image processing. It is a classic bitmap editor for retouching work without a full layer function (only temporary layers are included, which are embedded after use). The editor also supports various selection tools and masks.

Develop module: non-destructive image processing

The Develop module enables the conversion of files in RAW format into standard bitmap formats. The embedded standard does not support all current cameras , but the free DNG converter can also be integrated, with the help of which almost all common RAW formats can be converted. Version 18 also offers non-destructive image processing of all other common image formats (including JPEG).

Zoner Photo Studio 18

Zoner Photo Studio 18 was released in October 2015.

New functions in version 18

Simplified user interface

A new user interface should increase usability and give more space for the photo view.

More powerful catalog

The focus of the program is the catalog with sorting functions, which can be used to organize the photos according to folders, time and keywords. The field for the simplified search function, which automatically suggests information that has already been filled in, is also new. The recording locations are also searchable. With the new "Determine location" function, GPS coordinates are assigned geographical names.

Non-destructive editing

The new Develop module, which replaces the RAW module, works with all image formats including RAW. Editing the photos in this module is non-destructive - you can change all settings as you like without overwriting the original image. In general, all processing processes have been accelerated considerably, in some cases by several hundred percent. As a result, some effects should appear much more natural compared to the previous versions.

The stand-alone viewer

ZPS 18 provides a new, independent browser integrated into the Windows system.

Other new functions

  • Creating HD Videos
  • Send paper postcards directly from the program
  • an intelligent geo-location
  • Support for 4K monitors and Windows 10

Zoner Photo Studio 17

Zoner Photo Studio 17 was released in September 2014.

New functions in version 17

import

In this version, the ability to assign keywords during the import and to rename images has been integrated.

Manager

The sidebar in the manager has been expanded and now contains a small image preview. Image ratings are now available in stars instead of numbers; In addition, the ability to assign keywords to images using batch processing in the sidebar has been integrated. The catalog now indexes photos in the background and no longer slows down work. Auto-indexing of the Windows library for images has been integrated and the catalog has been given a more prominent place in the folder structure on the left. The catalog view now includes control over DLNA- enabled devices. In addition, a new tool for finding and deleting duplicates has been integrated in version 17.

RAW

The interface of the RAW module has been completely redesigned, with some elements added and some removed. The "Automatic" button, which offers automatic suggestions for various settings, has been integrated. The histogram curves were introduced as the most important new setting tool. The thumbnails in the manager now immediately reflect any changes made to the file in the RAW module. Support for the correction of lens errors through the use of LCP profiles during RAW development has been implemented.

Zoner Photo Studio 16

This version was released in October 2013.

New functions in version 16

Improved touch control support

Version 16 improves the functionality of the program on tablet PCs and touch screens.

Manager

In this version the view of the manager has been divided into different areas - the traditional browser, the “preview” for a quick full-screen view, the “map” for working with GPS coordinates and the “comparison” for a visual comparison of images side by side. In version 16, a miniature map has also been integrated in the sidebar of the manager, with the help of which GPS coordinates can be assigned via drag and drop.

editor

In this version, the vertical toolbar has been moved from the right to the left side and all editing functions can now be done in the sidebar. The “content-based scaling” function has been integrated in the editor, with which the size of central content is retained during scaling.

Zoner Photo Studio 15

Zoner Photo Studio 15 was released in October 2012.

New functions in version 15

Import module

The import of photos has been completely reorganized in version 15.

The new sidebar

The sidebar in the editor was introduced for the first time in this version; it replaces the basic editing dialog functions (e.g. colors, brightness, white balance, etc.). In version 15, the full-screen preview also replaces the small preview images in most editing windows. In addition, the "quick filters" have been integrated, which now guarantee a quick application of various functions for the special look (eg "Polaroid", "Cross Process" or "Lomo").

Automatic backup of the original

Each photo is automatically backed up in a local database when the user first changes it. This allows the original image to be restored if necessary. This function is activated in the basic setting, but can be switched off as an option.

synchronization

This tool synchronizes image collections from different sources.

Tilt shift

This function simulates a tilt-shift lens that softens the background of a photo (with different settings for the location and the amount of soft focus).

Zonerama

Zonerama is an online gallery provided by the developers of Zoner Photo Studio. The service can also be used without having purchased the software. Albums can be presented with different settings for privacy, visibility and many other options. Version 15 introduces the integration of the service within the program for the first time, whereby the integration of version 15 has now been revised again. It enables the processing of the images presented on Zonerama in Zoner Photo Studio.
