Nicolas Lombaerts (born March 20, 1985 in Bruges ) is a Belgian football player on the position of defender .

Club career

Career start in Bruges

Born in the largest city in West Flanders , Lombaerts began his active football career in 1991 with his hometown club, Club Bruges . After he had gone through the various youth leagues at the club, he was accepted from the 2003/04 season in the Jupiler League , the top football league in Belgium. There, in addition to more experienced defensive players such as Philippe Clement , Hans Cornelis , Olivier De Cock , Ivan Gvozdenović , Birger Maertens , David Rozehnal , Marek Špilár , Birger Van de Ven or Peter Van der Heyden , he had only minimal prospects of playing in the top football league Belgium.

When Lombaert's change became apparent at the end of the season due to the hopelessness of becoming a professional regular over Club Bruges, he moved to league rivals KAA Gent during the summer break before the 2004/05 season . Immediately after moving from the capital of West Flanders to the capital of East Flanders, the young defender made his competitive debut for Ghent . He played on August 7, 2004 in the first round in a 5-0 victory over Germinal Beerschot Antwerp for the full length of the game. In the first season with the new club, he made a total of 13 championship appearances and was already well on the way to becoming a regular player in the team's defensive row. He also played all six of his team's six games in the 2005 UI Cup , where he faced opponents such as Bohemians Dublin , FC Tescoma Zlín and FC Valencia .

As a regular in Ghent

He finally did that in the 2005/06 season , in which he was used in a total of 31 of 34 possible championship games and contributed one goal and one assist. He also scored an own goal that season, which sealed his team's defeat against KRC Genk . Lombaerts scored his first regular professional goal on January 21, 2006 in a 3-0 home win over RAA La Louvière , when he scored 3-0 in the 23rd minute after submission by Mbark Boussoufa . At the end of the championship, Lombaerts and his team were in fourth place in the table and thus automatically qualified for the UI Cup 2006 , where the team only started from the 3rd round , but there already after a total score of 2: 3 on a two-way leg against the Swiss opponent Grasshopper Club Zurich eliminated from the current competition. Lombaerts was there in both games of his team in action.

The 2006/07 season was similar to the previous one for the young central defender. In a total of 32 league appearances, in which he remained goalless, the team made it to fourth place at the end of the season, which, as in the previous year, meant a fixed place in the UI Cup. There the team already competed in Round 2 against the Northern Irish club Cliftonville FC and after a total score of 6-0 from the two-way leg they got into the third round without any problems , where, however, they were unlucky with a total score of 2-3 from the second leg. and the second leg against Aalborg BK from Denmark was eliminated from the current competition. After he had completed his last appearance for the Ghent club in a 1-1 away draw against KVC Westerlo on May 19, 2007 , the 22-year-old made another move in July 2007.

Change to Russia

Nicolas Lombaerts as a player for Zenit Saint Petersburg

After Lombaerts had already been courted by various clubs, including the then German second division 1. FC Köln , Lombaerts moved in July 2007 for a transfer fee of around four million euros to Russia to Zenit Saint Petersburg in the Premjer League . Here, too, he was used in 13 championship games in the 2007 season , where he was on the field for the full 90 minutes on his debut on July 15, 2007 in a 2-0 home win over FK Rostov . Overall, he scored two goals for his team this season. In the same season he was with the team for the first time in the club history of Zenit Saint Petersburg Russian football champion, after the pursuer Spartak Moscow was two points behind. For the first time since the Premjer League was introduced in Russian football, a club that is not based in the Russian capital, Moscow , became champions.

In addition, he took part from the second qualifying round for the 2007/08 UEFA Cup , where the team entered the group stage of the competition after qualifying and there in Group A as third party together with Everton FC (1st) and 1st place. FC Nürnberg (2nd) advanced to the round of 32 and defeated FC Villarreal there due to the away goals rule. In the later round of the last 16 , Lombaerts and his team only progressed through the away goals rule against Olympique Marseille , and then won the quarter-finals with a total score of 4-2 over Bayer 04 Leverkusen . After a clear 4-0 second leg win over FC Bayern Munich in the semi -finals, nothing stood in the way of the Russians getting into the 2007/08 UEFA Cup final . The team won this 2-0 over the Glasgow Rangers , but without a use of Lombaert, who was already injured at the time, and thus crowned themselves the 2007/08 UEFA Cup winners. The subsequent UEFA Super Cup game against the winner of the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League , Manchester United , which is still held at the end of the same month, won the trained troops of Advocaat with 2: 1.

Lombaert had to retire due to injury for most of the 2008 season and before that a good part of the UEFA Cup, as he was injured in the pre-season phase. After he had already failed due to a broken leg from February to early April 2008, he was immediately eliminated again because he suffered a torn cruciate ligament . After that, Lombaerts, who was mainly used on the left side of the defense in his home country, but moved further into the middle in Russia and finally demonstrated his skills as a central defender, fell out for almost half a year and did not return until October 2008 ongoing game operations. Over the entire season, Lombaerts only made two championship appearances. In the group stage of the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League , for which the team automatically qualified as champions of the year 2007, the team did not get far and were eliminated in Group H , but were third in the group for the round of 32 of the 2008 UEFA Cup / 09 qualified. In the current competition, the team was eliminated in the round of 16 against Udinese Calcio with a total score of 1: 2 from the return leg.

In the official league events of the game year 2009 , the left foot was used in 15 championship games, in which he contributed a goal for his team and ranked with the team in the final ranking behind Rubin Kazan (1st) and Spartak Moscow (2nd) in third place in the table. With this good season end result, Lombaerts and his team were entitled to take part in the third qualifying round for the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League . The team was eliminated in the play-offs , the actual fourth qualifying round, with a total score of 1: 2 against AJ Auxerre . In the Premjer League, which ran parallel to this, Lombaerts played in 14 league games in which the central defender was more offensive than in previous years. He had a total of three hits in the league. In the same season, the team trained by the Italian Luciano Spalletti made it into the Russian Cup final of the 2010 season , where the team - Nicolas Lombaerts was in action for the full 90 minutes - against FK Sibir Novosibirsk after a penalty from Roman Schirokow in the 60th minute of play for the second time in the club's history, the Russian Cup winner was.

Return to Belgium

National team career

First missions for the U-17 and U-19

After he was already in the Belgian U-17 national team in his youth and made his debut on October 1, 2001 in a qualifying game for the U-17 European Football Championship in Denmark in 2002 against the U-17 selection of Slovakia soon afterwards he was called up to the U-19 national team of Belgium. He and the team took part in the 2004 U-19 European Football Championship in Switzerland . The team coached by Marc Van Geersom was one of the outsiders there and proved itself to be such in the course of the competition. In the preliminary round , which lasted only three games , the team in Group A was eliminated as the bottom of the group with only one point scored. The 2004 European Championship was the only major and noteworthy tournament in which Lombaerts had participated with the Belgian U-19 national team.

Assignments in the U-21s and drafting into the senior national team

In the following year, the left-footed player was appointed to the Belgian U-21 national team for the first time , with the team taking part in the U-21 European Football Championship in 2007 in the Netherlands . Under the long-time U-21 national coach Jean-François De Sart , the team made it to the semifinals , where they were eliminated 2-0 against their peers from Serbia . After playing in the Belgian U-21 for around three years, he ended his engagement there in 2007 due to his advanced age.

After he was called up for the first time in the senior national team of his home country in 2005, but only sat on the bench in the game against Lithuania on October 12, 2005, he made his senior national team debut the following year. He was used on May 11, 2006 in Belgium's 2-1 victory over Saudi Arabia and came on in the 89th minute for the younger Steven Defour . After a further three calls without use and a two-minute operation against Serbia , Lombaerts came on October 13, 2007 in the 0-0 draw against Finland for the first time over the full game. To date (as of October 12, 2010) Lombaerts has been called up in 18 international matches, of which he was used in twelve games. Among other things, he was not considered for a single Belgian international match in 2008.

He scored his first goal for Belgium on October 12, 2010, when he scored the goal to lead his team 4-3 in the 90th minute of the European Championship qualifier against Austria . The encounter ended in a 4-4 draw.

Until his last nomination in 2016, Lombaerts had played a total of 39 games in which he scored three times.
