Benedykt Joachim Chmielowski (born March 20, 1700 in Łuck , † April 7, 1763 in Firlejów near Rohatyn ) was a Polish priest and author of the first Polish-language encyclopedia .

Life

Chmielowski attended the Jesuit college and the cathedral seminar in Lemberg . He then taught in various schools in that city, and among his students was Dymitr Jabłonowski , a member of the Polish aristocracy of the Jabłonowskis . Through this connection he received the post as a priest in the parish Firlejów and subsequently became the house prelate of Archbishop Mikołaj Gerard Wyżycki of Lemberg, dean in Rohatyn and canon in Kiev .

After Chmielowski had initially published prayer books, hagiographies and sermons, he wrote the Compendium Nowe Ateny albo Akademia wszelkiej sciencji pełna, na różne tytuły jak na classes podzielona, mądrym dla memoriału, idiotom dla nauki, politykom dla praktyki, melancholikom dla Rozrywki erygowana that in two volumes 1745–46 and an extended four-volume version 1754–56 in Lemberg. In the work he brought together information from the fields of theology, astronomy, astrology, geography, history, politics, mathematics, zoology, botany and mineralogy, referring to the writings of more than one hundred authors, in particular historical and geographical works by Marcin Bielski , Jan Długosz and Marcin Kromer related. Although the author was accused of plagiarism, errors and repetition of outdated information, and the work was soon overtaken by new publications such as Zbiór potrzebniejszych wiadomości (1781–1783) by Ignacy Krasicki , Chmielowski still has the credit of having written the first Polish-language encyclopedia.
