Sócrates Nolasco

Arístides Sócrates Henríquez Nolasco (born March 20, 1884 in Enriquillo , † July 2, 1980 in Santo Domingo ) was a Dominican writer, essayist and historian, diplomat and politician.

The son of General Manuel Henríquez y Carvajal attended school in his hometown, later in Santo Domingo, and studied literature in Cuba from 1906 to 1913. In 1913 he was elected to the Constituent Assembly. The following year he became Consul General of the Dominican Republic in Puerto Rico. He resigned from this post in protest against the US occupation of the Dominican Republic in 1916. In 1927 he married the musicologist Flérida Lamarche Henríquez .

From 1930 Nolasco was consul general in Venezuela. During this time, works such as El general Pedro Florentino y un momento de la Restauración (1930), Cuentos del Sur (1939) and Viejas memorias (1941) were created. In 1944 he became a corresponding member of the Dominican History Academy. In 1950 Nolasco went into exile in Puerto Rico, where he met Luis Muñoz Marín and wrote the book Escritores de Puerto Rico . From 1951 until his return to the Dominican Republic, he lived in Cuba.

In 1958 Nolasco became a senator in the Dominican Republic. He was the only member of Congress to oppose, supported only by the priest Eliseo Pérez Sánchez , a bill by the dictator Rafael Trujillo to introduce the death penalty. In 1961 he retired from politics for health reasons. The Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo awarded him an honorary professorship in 1973.
