Hermann Arntzenius (born March 20, 1765 in Zutphen , † November 15, 1842 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch legal scholar.

Life

Hermann Arntzenius was a son of Henricus Johannes Arntzenius . He had received his first education from his father and at the high school in his hometown. He completed his studies at the University of Groningen , where he was matriculated on June 22, 1781. Here he acquired the academic degree of Doctor of Laws on July 23, 1788 with the treatise Ad quaedam juris et veterum auctorum loca . He became vice principal of the grammar school in Gouda and after he had published an Epistola critica de quibusdam Pindari Thebani locis ad J. Ruardi in 1798 , the curators of the University of Utrecht appointed him professor of Roman law, Dutch law and public law on July 14, 1800 Right. Arntzenius began this task on October 8, 1800 with the treatise De quibusdam caussis praestantiae jurisprudentiae Romanae .

When the university was temporarily closed in 1815, he experienced a short period of vacancy in office from October 16 to November 6. He also took part in the organizational tasks and was rector of the alma mater in 1803/04 and 1820/21 . With the speech De patria potestate romana, origine sua et affectu indoli Civitatis conseatanea he ended his first term of office and with the speech de cultus humani progressione in iure populorum civili perspicua his second term. He seems to have been very busy with the practical exercise of his professorship, since otherwise no independent work of him has come down to us. On February 23, 1835 he was retired.

On May 12, 1799 in Gouda, Arntzenius had Anna Cornelia Metelerkamp († February 15, 1830 in Utrecht), the daughter of Dr. Alexander Henrik Metlerkamp and his wife Anna Elisabeth de Rhoer, married. There are four children from the marriage. Known are the daughters Henriette Elisabeth Arntzenius (* August 4, 1801 Utrecht; † December 8, 1881 in The Hague), who married Rudolf Florus Carel Bentink on December 11, 1828 in Utrecht, Henrica Wilhelmina Arntzenius (* August 16, 1803 in Utrecht; † March 11, 1844 in Zwolle), who married Bartholomeus Willem AE Sloet on November 15, 1833, and Rutgera Johanna Wilhelmina Arntzenius (born April 8, 1806 in Utrecht; † September 8, 1856 in Zwolle).
