Henricus Johannes Arntzenius (born April 20, 1734 in Nijmegen , † April 7, 1797 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch legal scholar.

Life

The son of the professor of philosophy, history and poetics at the University of Franeker Johann Arntzenius (1702–1759) and his wife Alida Johanna Busschoff received their first education from their father. On September 16, 1749 he enrolled at the University of Franeker. He enrolled again on May 31, 1755 as a student of law at the university, where he wrote the essay ad leg. 2 Dig. Then he became principal of the school in Leeuwarden , where he gave his introductory speech de Inscriptionum et lapidum eruditorum praestantia (Leeuwarden 1760) on December 27, 1757 .

After the disputation under Cannegieter he received the academic degree of Doctor of Laws in Franeker on July 13, 1760. On September 1, 1763 he went to Zutphen as rector, high school professor and librarian , which office he assumed with the speech de Praecipuis iurisprudentiae calamitatibus (Zutphen 1763). Here he turned down offers from a rectorate in The Hague and Amsterdam.

In 1774 he was appointed professor of Roman law by the curators of the University of Groningen , which position he took up on December 8 of the same year with the speech de Legibus quibusdam regiis, civilis apud Romanos sapientiae fonte (Groningen 1774). He was rector of the university in 1784/85 and after he had turned down an appointment to Franeker, he was also appointed professor of Dutch constitutional law in 1787. On May 19, 1788, the curators of the University of Utrecht appointed him professor of Roman law and legal history, which he took up on September 23, 1788 with the treatise De optima iuris Romani antecessoris forma, in Gerardo Noodtio, Noviomago, spectata . He also took part in the organizational tasks of the Utrecht University and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1793/94 .

Arntzenius was married twice. His first marriage was on August 5, 1760 with Rachel Cannegieter, the daughter of the professor and rector in Arnhem Hendrik Cannegieter and his wife Rachel Muys. His second marriage was on April 30, 1770 in Zutphen with Maria Beatrix Exalto d'Almaras († September 15, 1797 in Utrecht). There are several children from both marriages. Three sons survived their father. Hendrik Jan Arntzenius (born February 4, 1763 in Leeuwarden, † February 20, 1830 in Groningen), Johann Otto Arntzenius (1770-1825) and Hermann Arntzenius (1765-1842) are known.
