Hubertus Brieger

Hubertus Brieger (born April 26, 1909 in Sagan ; † March 20, 1978 in Greifswald ) was a German pediatrician and professor . From 1948 to 1974 he headed the University Children's Clinic at the Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald .

Life

Brieger was born in Sagan in 1909 as the son of an elementary school teacher. In Sagan he first attended middle school, then the humanistic high school. He then studied human medicine at the University of Innsbruck , the University of Graz , the University of Breslau , the University of Tübingen and the University of Greifswald . In Greifswald he passed the medical state examination in 1935 and was promoted to Dr. med. PhD.

This was followed by training as a pediatrician, first in Greifswald, then at the University Children's Clinic of the University of Rostock . Here he became a specialist in paediatrics in 1941 and senior physician at the clinic in 1945. At the same time, he conducted research in the field of vitamin C - and vitamin D - metabolism . In 1948 he received the title of Dr. for his scientific work without a formal habilitation process. med. habil. and became a university lecturer.

In July 1948 Brieger was appointed professor to the chair for paediatrics in Greifswald, at the same time he became director of the university children's clinic. Brieger stayed in Greifswald until the end of his life. He succeeded in expanding the university children's clinic, beginning with an isolation house in 1951 and a farm building in 1953.

In 1974, at the age of 65, Brieger retired . In the same year he received the honorary title of " Honored Doctor of the People ". After a long illness he died in Greifswald in 1978 and was buried in the forest cemetery in Lubmin .
