Leticia Ramos Shahani (born Leticia Valdez Ramos ; born September 30, 1929 in Lingayen , Pangasinan ; † March 20, 2017 in Taguig City ) was a Filipino university professor , literary scholar and politician .

biography

Leticia Valdez Ramos came from a politically influential family. Her father Narciso Ramos was not only a long-time MP but also Foreign Minister, while she was related to President Ferdinand Marcos through her mother Angela Valdez Ramos . Her older brother, Fidel Ramos, was President of the Philippines from 1992 to 1998.

After attending elementary school and secondary school at the University of the Philippines at Wellesley College in Massachusetts, she studied English literature and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA English Literature). She then completed a postgraduate degree in comparative literature at Columbia University with a Master of Arts (MA Comparative Literature). She then obtained a Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D. Comparative Literature) with distinction.

From 1954 to 1957 she was a lecturer at the University of the Philippines, before becoming a lecturer in English literature, French , Spanish , comparative literature, humanities and social psychology at the Graduate School of the Lyceum of the Philippines , of which she was later also dean . She was also a lecturer at Queens Community College in 1961 , at Brooklyn College in 1962, and at the New School for Social Research between 1962 and 1967 .

In addition, from 1964 to 1968 she worked in the department for human rights in the UN Secretariat and in 1974 chaired the UN Commission on the Status of Women. She was also at times Secretary General of the UN Congress on Crime Prevention and the Treatment of Offenders.

She later passed the Philippine Service Office Examination for senior civil service positions and was not only chair of the National Commission on the Role of Filipino Women, but also an ambassador to Australia and Romania . Between 1981 and 1986 she was Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations for Social Development and Humanitarian Affairs and during 1985 also Secretary General of the UN World Conference on Women in Nairobi in 1985.

After her return to the Philippines after the overthrow of President Marcos in the wake of the People Power Revolution (EDSA I), she was appointed Vice Minister for Philippine Affairs in February 1986 by the new President Corazon Aquino .

After joining the Senate in June 1987 , she resigned from the government and chaired the Foreign Affairs, Education, Culture and Arts and Agriculture Committees while serving in the Senate . She was a member of the Senate until 1998.

Leticia Shahani, who was married to the Indian writer and university professor Ranjee Shahani, was Senate President pro tempore between 1993 and 1996 and thus the representative of the Senate President in the event of his absence or illness.

Leticia Ramos Shahani died on March 20, 2017 in St. Luke's Hospital in Taguig City of complications from "stage 4" colon cancer . After chemotherapy and stem cell therapy, Shahani developed pneumonia and fell into a coma.
