Andrée Chedid (born March 20, 1920 in Cairo , † February 6, 2011 in Paris ) was a French writer of Lebanese origin.

Life

Andrée Chedid, born in 1920 as Andrée Saab, from a Lebanese family living in Egypt , studied journalism at the American University in Cairo. In 1942 she married Louis Chedid, who was then studying medicine. Andrée Chedid published her first collection of poems, On the Trails of my Fancy , in Cairo in 1943. She settled with her husband in Paris in 1946 and began writing there. In addition to numerous poems and novels , she also wrote plays and children's books , most of which were published by Groupe Flammarion . Her poetry volumes were partly illustrated by the Luxembourg painter Roger Bertemes .

In 1972 Chedid received the Prix de l'Aigle d'or for poetry. Numerous other literary prizes followed. In 1976 she was awarded the Prix ​​Mallarmé for her books Fraternité de la parole and Cérémonial de la violence . Her best-known work is the novel L'Autre , which has been translated into many languages and tells of the rescue of a foreigner buried in an earthquake by an ancient Egyptian and was filmed in 1991 by Bernard Giraudeau under the title L'Autre . Andrée Chedid also received the Grand Prix of the Société des Auteurs, Compositeurs et Éditeurs de Musique (SACEM) in 1999 and the Prix ​​Goncourt de la poésie in 2002 for her poems .

Both her son Louis Chedid and her grandson Matthieu Chedid are well-known pop singers in France . Matthieu Chedid received the César 2007 for best film music for the soundtrack in No Words of Death (2006) .

In a tribute, French President Nicolas Sarkozy called her part of a “generation of cosmopolitan intellectuals who chose France as their new home after the war and thus helped the country to a literary renaissance”.
