Elisabeth Amalie Magdalene von Hessen-Darmstadt (* March 20, 1635 in Gießen ; † August 4, 1709 in Neuburg an der Donau ) was a born princess of Hessen-Darmstadt and through marriage initially Duchess of Pfalz-Neuburg , Jülich and Berg and later also Electress of the Palatinate .

Life

Elisabeth Amalie was a daughter of Landgrave Georg II of Hesse-Darmstadt (1605–1661) from his marriage to Sophie Eleonore (1609–1671), a daughter of Elector Johann Georg I of Saxony . Elisabeth Amalie, raised by her mother in a strictly Lutheran manner, was considered a princess with a captivating appearance with strikingly blond hair, which she is said to have kept into old age.

On September 3, 1653, Elisabeth Amalie married in Langenschwalbach, who would later become Elector Philipp Wilhelm of the Palatinate, 20 years her senior . The marriage came about through the mediation of Landgrave Ernst von Hessen-Rheinfels , after Elisabeth Amalie had initially converted to Catholicism in secret and without the knowledge or consent of her family. She publicly and solemnly accepted the new creed on November 1, 1653 in the Andreas Church of Düsseldorf , in the presence of the elector and archbishop of Cologne Maximilian Heinrich .

The 37-year marriage was considered extremely happy. The extremely pious elector couple lived and shaped Düsseldorf in the first years of their marriage by founding and equipping churches and monasteries. Later, Philipp Wilhelm and Elisabeth Amalie increasingly withdrew to Neuburg, where the Electress, who survived her husband for almost 20 years, was also buried in the court church .

The writer Wilhelm Nakatenus dedicated his work Das Himmlisch Palm-Gärtlein to her .

progeny

In the course of their marriage, Elisabeth Amalie was pregnant 23 times. She gave birth to 9 sons and 8 daughters. With her sons-in-law, Elisabeth Amalie was a central dynastic figure of her time.
