Magdalena to the lip
Magdalena zur Lippe (born February 25, 1552 in Detmold , † February 26, 1587 in Darmstadt ) was the first Landgrave of Hessen-Darmstadt by marriage .
Life
Magdalena was a daughter of Count Bernhard VIII zu Lippe (1527–1563) from his marriage to Katharina (1524–1583), daughter of Count Philip III. from Waldeck-Eisenberg . After the death of her father, the countess came to Kassel for further education at the court of Landgrave Wilhelm von Hessen . Here Magdalena, who is considered a beauty, met her future husband. On August 17, 1572, she married Landgrave Georg I of Hesse-Darmstadt in Kassel . Wilhelm had taken over the costs of the wedding. The marriage was considered happy and Magdalena so virtuous, pious and benevolent that she was compared to Saint Elizabeth . Magdalena wrote a prayer book for her children herself. She died after 15 years of marriage after giving birth to her last child at the age of 35.
Magdalena is buried in the choir of the city church of Darmstadt. The Landgravine's famous epitaph , which was dedicated to her by her husband in 1589, is located behind the high altar . Together with her husband, Magdalena laid the foundation for the Hessian state and university library.
