history

The Palatine Chapel of St. Maria existed on the site of today's church before 1000. Under Duke Henry IV. One was Benedictine monastery built. After the conversion into a Protestant church under Ottheinrich , the church tower collapsed in 1585. From 1599 to 1602 the church was rebuilt, but collapsed again before it was completed.

Today's church was built as a Protestant court church on Karlsplatz from 1607/08 according to plans by the imperial court painter Josef Heintz and court architect Sigmund Doctor. The model for today's church is the Jesuit Church of St. Michael in Munich . It is an important work of Mannerism , which is a style of transition from late Renaissance to Baroque . As early as 1613, Prince Wolfgang Wilhelm converted it into a Catholic Jesuit church. The equipment is kept entirely in the counter-Reformation sense. The high altar painting , The Great Last Judgment , was completed by Peter Paul Rubens in 1617 and is the artist's largest painting. It was brought to his Düsseldorf picture gallery in 1691 by Duke Johann Wilhelm ; today it is in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. The side altars had a similar fate: They come from Peter Paul Rubens, were brought to Düsseldorf in 1703, also came to the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, but found their way back to Neuburg and are now in the Staatsgalerie in Neuburg Castle . The stucco work from 1616 to 1619 was made by the brothers Gian Antonio and Pietro Castelli from Melide, Ticino , while Johann Jakob Breitenauer was responsible for the baroque furnishings.

The court church was consecrated on October 21, 1618, for which three bishops and an auxiliary bishop had come, because the area of the Palatinate-Neuburg extended over their dioceses. Heinrich von Knöringen (Augsburg), Johann Christoph von Westerstetten (Eichstätt) and Albert von Toerring-Stein (Regensburg) as well as the Augsburg auxiliary bishop Peter Wall shared the consecration of the four altars among themselves.

It was the preferred church of the Princely House as well as the collegiate church of the Jesuits. The church is connected to the castle via a corridor.

The west facade and tower were not completed until 1624 by Johann Alberthal and Antonio Serro and still shape the old town of Neuburg today. A complete renovation took place from 1969 to 1983. The roof structure was renovated in 2007/08, the facade and tower in 2009/10.
