The Staatsgalerie Neuburg an der Donau is a picture gallery opened in April 2005 in the west wing of the Residenzschloss in Neuburg an der Donau , in the so-called Ottheinrich building . It is dedicated to Flemish Baroque painting and comprises around 160 paintings. As a branch gallery of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen it is run by its general director. Bernhard Maaz has held the office since April 1, 2015 . Predecessors were Klaus Schrenk (March 1, 2009 to October 31, 2014) and Reinhold Baumstark , the first director of the Staatsgalerie Neuburg.

The Ottheinrich Building , named after Count Palatine Ottheinrich , who had the palace rebuilt in the Renaissance style in the 16th century , was largely restored to its original state for 23.5 million euros before the museum opened. For example, the original doors and their frames still lead into the rooms. Only the green illuminated glass stairs with their modern metal railings and a modern elevator suitable for the disabled create a contrast to the renaissance interior design. Before the visitor gets to the actual museum, he gets to some anteroom, where he can be introduced to Flemish painting of the 17th century through changing special exhibitions and an information center about Antwerp as an art center. The actual museum has five rooms on the first floor and a large hall on the second floor.

The center of the permanent exhibition is formed by two side altar paintings by Peter Paul Rubens in the great hall. These were created with the corresponding middle section on behalf of Wolfgang Wilhelm von Pfalz-Neuburg in 1619 for the Neuburg Court Church and show the adoration of the shepherds and the pouring out of the Holy Spirit . The middle section, The Great Last Judgment , is located in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. In addition to the two side altar paintings, eight other paintings by Rubens and his workshop can be seen.

The dominant number are the works of the Antwerp School , by painters such as Anthonis van Dyck , Jacob Jordaens , Alexander Keirincx , Joos de Momper , Frans Francken the Younger , Frans Snyders , David Teniers the Younger , Hendrik van Balen the Elder , Jan Cossiers, Jan Wildens , Lucas van Uden , Daniel Seghers , Andries van Eertvelt and Bonaventura Peeters . Jan Brueghel the Elder , Joos van Craesbeeck and Paul de Vos were not born in Antwerp, like Rubens, but worked there and also members of the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke . There are also works by Brussels painters such as Denis van Alsloot and Gillis van Tilborgh , as well as works from the Liège School , by painters such as Gérard Douffet and Bertholet Flémal .
