Jan Wildens
Jan Wildens (* 1586 in Antwerp ; † October 16, 1653 there ) was a Flemish painter .
Life
Wildens was a student of Peter Verhulst and in 1604 became master of the painters' guild in his hometown. From 1613 to 1618 he lived in Italy , after his return he came into contact with Peter Paul Rubens . Wildens designed the landscapes in many of Rubens' paintings with a broad brush and a decorative conception.
There are few of his independent work. Among them are hunters with dogs in a winter landscape (1624, brown, with natural-size figures, Dresden), view of Antwerp from the land side (1636, Rijksmuseum Amsterdam ), landscape with windmill, storm clouds, lightning, rain and rainbow (signed 1640 or 1649, Augsburg) and a large landscape with sunset over a river (Vienna). Some of his landscapes were engraved by important engravers in the country. Furthermore, Wildens were awarded some unsigned paintings in Madrid, Karlsruhe and London.
