Bonaventura Peeters the Elder (* July 23 or 25, 1614 in Antwerp , † July 25, 1652 in Hoboken near Antwerp) was a Flemish marine painter , etcher , draftsman and poet of the Baroque .

Life

Little is known about his early life, but he grew up in a prominent family of artists. Peeters learned painting from his father, master of the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke from 1607 to 1608. His brothers Gillis Peeters (1612–1653), who worked with him, Jan Peeters (1624–1677) and his sister Catharina Peeters (1615–1676) were also Marine painter. His nephew of the same name, son of Gillis Peeters, was known as Bonaventure Peeters the Younger .

Peeters devoted himself to marine painting after long sea voyages that could have taken him to Turkey . Better-known images such as his port of Arkhangelsk (1644) suggest that he spent his early years at sea. Other images ( Orient , America ), on the other hand, suggest influences of the beginning exoticism , i.e. a free design of the themes according to his imagination.

Peeters liked to portray the turbulent or stormy sea, animated by ships, but also coastal landscapes with figures. They are also called zeekens (little seascapes). This specialization was typical of the heyday of this painting, which it reached in the Dutch school of the 17th century, the Dutch Golden Age . Excellent older marine painters were also Jan Porcellis (before 1584–1632), Jan van Goyen (1596–1656), Willem van de Velde the Elder (1611–1693) and Ludolf Backhuysen (1630–1708), of whom he was considered the best .

1634 he was also in the Guild of St. Luke added. He remained active in his hometown until the beginning of the 1640s. After being persecuted by the Jesuits , on whom he wrote a satirical poem, he had to leave Antwerp and moved to nearby Hoboken. He died there at the age of 38.

In his short creative period he created quite a large number of paintings. Sun posted Gustav Parthey around 60 paintings in the galleries of Berlin , Dresden , Kassel , Antwerp, Braunschweig and Vienna ( Austrian Gallery Belvedere ). Today there are works in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich / London, in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels and in the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum.
