Wadsworth Atheneum

The Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford , Connecticut , is the oldest public art museum in the United States .

The museum was founded by Daniel Wadsworth and built from 1842 by the architects Alexander Jackson Davis and Ithiel Town . The museum was opened on July 31, 1844. Wadsworth donated 78 paintings in addition to busts and sculptures to the museum for its opening.

The Wadsworth Atheneum grew through extensive bequests from Elizabeth Hart Jarvis Colt and JP Morgan . Another collection was given to the museum as The Ella Gallup Sumner and Mary Catlin Sumner Collection .

In 1967 the American sculptor Tony Smith donated his collection of seven paintings by American Abstract Expressionism painters, including paintings by Jackson Pollock , Clyfford Still , Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman , to the museum.
