Elizabeth Hart Jarvis Colt (* 1826 - August 21, 1905 ) was the wife of the arms manufacturer Samuel Colt and after his death ran Colt's Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company . Through her philanthropic commitment she gained importance for the spread of American painting.

Live and act

Elizabeth Hart Jarvis was the daughter of Elizabeth Miller Hart and pastor William Jarvis in 1827. On June 5, 1856, she married Samuel Colt, who gained access to closed circles of Connecticut society through their marriage .

Her husband, Samuel, died on January 10, 1862, at the age of only 47. Elizabeth Colt assumed the office of president of the arms factory. It made her the wealthiest woman in New England . Elisabeth Hart Jarvis Colt ran her husband's company during the American Civil War and sold it to investors in 1901.

She was involved in numerous religious, cultural and social organizations. Elizabeth Colt became an important patron of American painting. She bequeathed her collection of over 600 paintings to the Wadsworth Atheneum .
