Bertholet Flémal or Flemalle (* before May 23, 1614 in Liège ; † July 10, 1675 ibid) was a Liège painter.

Life

Flémal became a student in the studio of the painter Gérard Douffet and with his support Flémal was able to go on a study trip to Italy at the age of 24. In the summer of 1638 Flémal settled in Rome to study the ancient masters.

There the Grand Duke of Toscana, Ferdinand II. Noticed him and invited the artist to his court in Florence . In 1670 Flémal settled in Paris and was very generously supported there by the great patron , Chancellor Pierre Séguier . For a church of the Augustinian monks Flémal created the “Adoration of the Magi” and the dome of a church of the Carmelites he decorated with his ceiling fresco “The Assumption of Elijah”.

In the summer of 1647 Flémal settled in Brussels for a few years and later went to Liège . In 1670, Flémal was brought to Paris and he was entrusted with a teaching position at the École des Beaux-Arts . He was promoted to professor at the art academy, but when he was appointed canon at St. Paul's Cathedral in the same year , he returned to his hometown.

The painter Bertholet Flémal died on July 10, 1675 in his hometown of Liège at the age of 61.

During his stay in Rome Flémal was - by his own admission - very influenced by the Roman school ; but also painters, such as B. Nicolas Poussin were Flémal's role models.

Louis Counet (* 1652 Liège, † August 5, 1721 in Trier by a robbery) was probably a student of Flémal. He was a sought-after painter in the entire Moselle region. For example, the painting “Saint Laurentius baptizes Lucillus in the dungeon” was created for the Laurentius altar of the Abbey Church of St. Maximin , which is now in the City Museum Simeonstift Trier .
