← European Champion Clubs' Cup 1986/87 |
The 1987/88 European Champion Clubs' Cup was the 33rd edition of the competition. 32 club teams took part, including 31 national champions from the previous season and the defending champions with FC Porto. The competition ended with the final in the Neckar Stadium in Stuttgart on May 25, 1988. With this title win, PSV Eindhoven has the worst record of all winners, as they could not win a single game from the quarter-finals onwards and only survived the quarter-finals and semi-finals due to the away goals rule .
mode
The participants played in a pure cup mode with (except for the finals) back and forth games for the crown of European club football. In the case of a tie, the higher number of goals scored away counted first; if there was also a tie, the second leg was extended and, if necessary, a penalty shoot-out was then played as a decision.
