Life

Portrait of van Eertveld by Anthony van Dyck

Andries van Eertvelt is considered one of the most important Flemish marine painters of his time. Nothing is known about his training. By 1609/10 at the latest he worked as a freelance master and was mentioned as a sought-after teacher for about a decade. Towards the end of the 20s of the 17th century, based on his pictorial motifs, a longer study visit to Genoa and Naples is assumed. From March 1631 it is documented again in Antwerp. There is evidence of his good relationship with other Flemish painters of his time. He was portrayed by Anthony van Dyck .

Although van Eertvelt did not break new ground, he was a solid master in his field. His strength was the representation of turbulent and stormy seas in connection with richly painted ships. He was one of the few Flemish painters who tried their hand at this genre and was successful with it.

There are numerous variants of his name: Andries van Ertvelt , Andries van Artvelt , Andries van Aertvelt , Andries van Artevelde , Andries van Artevelt . The preferred spelling at the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie is Andries van Eertvelt .
