Ora (symbol: Φ) is the name of the coupon system , the de facto currency of Orania , a quasi-autonomous Boer (Afrikaaner) community in South Africa . The currency is pegged 1-to-1 to the South African rand . Ora is based on the Latin word aurum for gold . The issue and use of the currency was not sanctioned by the South African Reserve Bank . The Ora is issued by Orania Spaar en Krediet (OSK), formerly Orania Spaar en Kredietkoöperatief , which thus acts as the de facto central bank .
history
The first banknotes were issued in April 2004 to give further expression to the self-government of the area. The decision to have its own currency goes back to 2002 and Johan van Zyl .
Banknotes
The currency is issued in banknotes of 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 ora. The 10 ora note represents the history of the Afrikaans, the 20 ora note symbolizes their art, the 50 ora note the culture of the Boers and the note with a value of 100 ora the place of Orania. The 200 Ora notes issued since 2014 are dedicated to life in Orania.
The Ora banknotes are not valid indefinitely: The expiry date of the respective issue can be found on the back of the notes. There is also a field on the back where advertisements from local companies are printed.
use
The Ora is accepted in Orania and surrounding towns. In order to increase the acceptance of the currency, some shops in Orania sell their goods against Ora at a discount. The positive effect of using the Ora is the reduction of cash theft, as the currency is practically nowhere else to be accepted. In 2011, ora values between 400,000 and 580,000 were in circulation.
With the Eora since 2017 cryptocurrency introduced.
