Princess and Countess Palatine Leopoldine Eleonore von Neuburg

Leopoldine Eleonore Josepha von Pfalz-Neuburg (born May 27, 1679 in Neuburg an der Donau , † March 8, 1693 in Düsseldorf ) was a princess of the Electoral Palatinate and Countess Palatine von Neuburg .

Life

Leopoldine Eleonore was the youngest of the 17 children of Elector Philipp Wilhelm von der Pfalz (1615–1690) from his second marriage to Elisabeth Amalie (1635–1709), daughter of Landgrave Georg II of Hesse-Darmstadt .

Leopoldine's oldest sister, Eleonore Magdalene , had been married to the Roman-German Emperor Leopold I since 1676 , which helped her numerous siblings to have brilliant careers. After the death of her father, her older brother Johann Wilhelm became a guardian, who also laid down her educational instructions. In addition to languages, religion and handicrafts, the princess was given musical training by the court conductor Sebastiano Moratelli .

In the summer of 1691, Leopoldine fell seriously ill after she had come to Düsseldorf from Neuburg. She was cared for by her sister-in-law Anna Maria , who developed a great affection for the princess, and her personal physician Giovanni Cosimo Bonomo . Her condition improved again. In March 1693 she was betrothed to Elector Maximilian II Emanuel von Bayern , who had been widowed since 1692 , but died shortly afterwards at the age of 13 after lying in a fever for seven days.

Leopoldine was buried in the Andreas Church in Düsseldorf , her heart capsule was brought to the princely crypt of the court church in Neuburg, where she rests with the heart capsule of her brother Philipp Wilhelm August on her mother's coffin. Leopoldine's coffin is now in the mausoleum of St. Andrew's Church and was opened in 2007 for decontamination work. The mummified remains of the princess, who was buried in silk stockings, suggest that she died of tuberculosis .
