Francesco Maria Farnese (born May 19, 1678 , † May 26, 1727 ) was the second son of Duke Ranuccio II Farnese of Parma and Piacenza . He followed this on his death on December 11, 1694 as Duke, after his older half-brother Odoardo II Farnese had died the year before.

Two years after his accession to the throne, on December 7, 1696 , he married Dorothea Sophie von der Pfalz (* July 5, 1670 , †  September 15, 1748 ), the daughter of Elector Philipp Wilhelm and widow of his half-brother. In contrast to Dorothea Sophie's first marriage, her second marriage remained childless.

On December 24, 1714 , Francesco married his stepdaughter Elisabetta Farnese (1692–1766) to the Spanish King Philip V (1683–1746). Since both Francesco and his brother and successor Antonio Farnese (1679-1731) had no descendants, they inherited the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza after the Farnese in the male line died out in 1731, and with it the Bourbon family on the Spanish throne.
