Johannes Friedrich Ludwig Schröder
Johannes Friedrich Ludwig Schröder (also: Johannes Frederik Lodewijk Schröder ; born October 30, 1774 in Dornberg ; † March 20, 1845 in Utrecht ) was a German Lutheran theologian and mathematician.
Life
The son of Johann Ludwig Schröder and Margaretha Elisabeth Graf received his first training at the age of thirteen in Amsterdam , where his brother worked as a teacher. Here he attended the Latin school from 1788 and from January 1790 to September 1793 the Athenaeum Illustre Amsterdam . At the Athenaeum he received a theological training and was guided philologically by Daniel Wyttenbach, among others . After receiving further education at the Remonstrant seminary in Amsterdam, he moved to the University of Halle in September 1795 . Here he attended, among other things, the theological lectures of Georg Christian Knapp and August Hermann Niemeyer , as well as the lectures at the philosophical faculty with Friedrich August Wolf , Johann Heinrich Tieftrunk and Ludwig Heinrich von Jakob .
In Halle he was made familiar with the philosophical, rationalistic basic ideas of Immanuel Kant , which shaped his entire life. In 1778 he returned to Amsterdam and was assistant pastor of the Lutheran congregation there. On March 23, 1803 he became director of studies of the cadets of the frigate Euridice in Hellevoetsluis and also received the title of sea captain . In 1806 he went to the institute in Feijenoord , and in 1809 he moved to Enkhuizen as director . In the time of Napoleon he was released from his duties in 1810. After that he worked without office in Amsterdam and Maarssen . On October 16, 1815 he was appointed professor of mathematics at the University of Utrecht .
After he had received the academic degree of doctor of the philosophical natural sciences on January 10, 1816, he entered on January 25, 1816 with the speech Oratio de majoribus corporum coelestium permutationibus, quatenus ex iis progressum naturae in his corporibus formandis suspicari licet his professorship on. His lectures also included logic, metaphysics, and philosophical ethics. Schröder also took part in the organizational tasks of the Utrecht University and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1823/24 . He retired on January 1, 1845 and died just a few months later. Schröder had been a member of the Batavian Society for Experimental Philosophy in Haarlem since 1805 and a member of the Royal Institute of Science in Amsterdam since May 14, 1813 .
