Georg Christian Knapp (born September 17, 1753 in Glaucha , † October 14, 1825 in Halle ) was a Protestant theologian .

Live and act

The son of the director of the Halle orphanage, Johann Georg Knapp , received his first training from his father. At the royal pedagogy in Halle he had made further progress under the direction of Johann August Niemeyer and attended the orphanage's Latin school. In 1770 he began studying at the University of Halle . Emulating his father, he had devoted himself to studying theology. He attended the lectures of Johann Salomo Semler , Johann August Nösselt , Johann Ludwig Schulze , Gottlieb Anastasius Freylinghausen and Johann Friedrich Gruner . In addition, he pursued philosophical and philological studies, with particular attention to the Greek language and the Roman classics. Soon he became a teacher at the orphanage's Latin school.

So he had acquired the financial means to do a study trip. In 1774 he went to the University of Göttingen , where he attended the lectures of Christian Wilhelm Franz Walch , Gotthelf Traugott Zachariä (1729–1777), Johann Peter Miller (1725–1789) and Johann David Michaelis . Half a year later he visited other cities and returned to Halle. In Halle, he obtained his master's degree in philosophy with his dissertation De versione Alexandrina in emendana lectione exempli hebraici caute abhibenda in 1775 , then gave exegetical lectures on some of Cicero's books , became an associate professor of theology in 1777 , and was promoted to licentiate in theology in 1780 and in 1782 became a full professor of theology in Halle.

He received his doctorate in theology in 1784 , was co-director of the Francke Foundations in 1785 , became the royal free table after the death of Nösselt Ephorus and experienced the occupation of French troops from October 1806. At that time, the University of Halle was abolished, which he witnessed until the restoration in 1813. After he had helped rebuild the University of Halle, he became consistorial councilor in the royal Prussian consistory of the province of Saxony in 1816 . In 1816 he became president of the biblical society founded in Halle, in 1820 he was senior of the theological faculty and received from Friedrich Wilhelm III. of Prussia in 1825 the red order of eagles, second class, with oak leaves.

Several learned societies such as in 1800 the Royal Society in London and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm had accepted him as a member. He also took part in organizational tasks at the University of Halle and was prorector of the Alama Mater in 1792/93 . As the last representative of Halle Pietism, Knapp dealt with biblical supranaturalism . Therefore, he never made a particularly explicit appearance. He maintained relations with the Moravian Brethren and took part in the East India Gentile Mission by publishing the "Mission News".

Georg Christian Knapp was buried in Halle's Stadtgottesacker . His grave is in crypt arch 60.
