Markus C. Blaich

Markus C. Blaich (born September 3, 1968 in Ingelheim am Rhein ) is a German prehistoric archaeologist and medieval archaeologist. He is a member of the Association of State Archaeologists .

Blaich initially studied Prehistory and Early History , Ancient History , Classical Archeology and Geography at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and moved to the Philipps University of Marburg in 1992 . There he obtained his Magister Artium in 1997 on the subject of "The early Halemannic finds from Nagold , Kr. Calw". Since 1991 he has been involved in several excavations in Germany and the inventory of monuments of the state monuments offices of Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate .

After working for Theiss Verlag in 1998 and 1999, a stay at the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg followed . In July 2002 he received his doctorate from the Philipps University of Marburg with his thesis “The grave field of Eltville , Rhein-Taunus-Kreis. Contributions to the settlement history of the Rheingau from the 5th to the 8th centuries ”, which was supervised by the archaeologist Horst Wolfgang Böhme and supported by a scholarship from the State of Hesse's graduate support. For those with magna cum laude rated working Markus Blaich was awarded the Hessian Science Award of 2003. The Association for Hessian History and Regional Studies 1834 awarded Blaich the Georg Landau Medal in 2003 for the best thesis on Hessian history. He is the first to be awarded a prize as an archaeologist, as the award goes to historians. From 2002 to 2004 he was initially a volunteer and then a research assistant at the Lower Saxony State Office for Monument Preservation . During this time the intensive occupation with the mining industry of the Harz and the role of the Cistercian monastery of Walkenried falls. From 2005 to 2006 he worked as a scientific editor at the State Office for Monument Preservation and Archeology of Saxony-Anhalt . This was followed from 2007 to 2012 as a project coordinator for the work on the creation of the archeology and landscape park Königspfalz Werla and the processing of the old excavations (1875-1964). He carried out this task for the district archeology of Braunschweig of the Lower Saxony State Office for Monument Preservation in close cooperation with the Harz - Braunschweiger Land - Ostfalen Geopark . In the meantime , he curated the exhibition "Hildesheim in the Middle Ages" for the 1200th anniversary of the founding of the Hildesheim diocese . The roots of the rose ”in the Roemer and Pelizaeus Museum Hildesheim (2013–2015) and was responsible for the scientific support of the Hildesheim World Heritage Visitor Center, which was set up in 2015 for the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of the Cathedral and Michaeliskirche .

Since 2009 Blaich has been a lecturer for historical building research at the HAWK Hildesheim / Holzminden / Göttingen . He represents medieval and modern archeology at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . His scientific focus is on studies of royal palaces in the Harz region , medieval monasteries in northern Germany and the analysis of early medieval burial grounds . Blaich is a founding member of the working group "Late Antiquity and Early Middle Ages" of the German Antiquities Associations, member of the European working group Medieval Europe Research Committee (MERC) and regularly takes part in the meetings of the European association of castle researchers, Chateau Gaillard. Since November 1, 2015, Blaich has been deputy head of the archeology department of the Lower Saxony State Office for Monument Preservation as a research assistant .
