Marion Witteyer (* 1956 in Elz (Westerwald) ) is a German archaeologist . Since January 10, 2012 she has been the head of the Mainz branch of the Regional Archeology Directorate of the General Directorate for Cultural Heritage Rhineland-Palatinate . It is intended to guarantee continuity in the work of the GDKE in the spirit of Gerd Rupprecht , her predecessor.

Life

Witteyer was already inspired by the Roman city of Mainz ( Mogontiacum ) and its 500-year membership of the Roman Empire while studying at the University of Mainz . Since the study of provincial Roman archeology was not offered in Mainz, Witteyer continued her studies at the University of Munich , which she completed in 1990 with her dissertation on the topic of "Settlement history in the lower and middle Nahe". In the same year Witteyer became an employee of the state archeology, since 2005 she has acted as the deputy branch manager at the Erthaler Hof .

When the first Mainz Roman ships were found in the old town of Mainz during construction work near the fire in 1981/1982 , she was involved in their excavation as an excavation assistant . Marion Witteyer's main focus is Provincial Roman Archeology . As part of long-term projects, she deals with Latin inscriptions from Rheinhessen and the Nahe region , as well as with the excavation, research and presentation of large Roman buildings in Mainz . As part of the last-mentioned field of activity, Witteyer was significantly involved in the excavation and research of the sanctuary of Isis and Mater Magna and the Roman city gate with remains of the late ancient city wall on the Kästrich in Mainz.
