Rainer-Maria Weiss

Rainer-Maria Weiss (* 1966 in Neuburg an der Donau ) is a German archaeologist .

Life

Study and job

Bavaria and Berlin

Rainer-Maria Weiss studied prehistory and early history as well as art history at the University of Regensburg , where he received his doctorate in 1995.

In 1990 he became an employee of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation in Regensburg . In 1991 there was a change to the Museum of Prehistory and Early History in Berlin . Weiss was also active in the preservation of monuments in both Berlin and Bavaria . He also worked for the Gäubodenmuseum in Straubing . In 2001 Weiss was appointed curator at the Berlin Museum of Prehistory and Early History.

Hamburg

In 2003 he was appointed director of the Helms Museum in Hamburg . As a Hamburg state archaeologist , he is also responsible for the preservation of monuments in the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and in the Harburg district .

Together with Anne Klammt, Weiss emphasized on the basis of new archaeological findings that the Hamburg complex (“ Hammaburg ”) was not, as previously suspected, a church. Rather, the city emerged from a place where trade was carried out.
