Michael Maria Rind (born March 14, 1959 in Duisburg ) is a German prehistoric archaeologist . Since 2009 he has been head of the LWL archeology for Westphalia and the state archaeologist for Westphalia .

Life

After school and A-levels in Duisburg and Steinfeld, Rind studied prehistory, early history , classical archeology , art history and folklore at the University of Münster from 1977 to 1984 and completed his dissertation in 1984 on the Urnfield settlement of Dietfurt / Upper Palatinate. He then worked as a research assistant in the seminar for prehistory and early history in Münster. From 1985 to 1988 he produced three publications on settlement excavations on the Main-Danube Canal on behalf of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation . From 1989 he headed the excavation office of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation in Kelheim and carried out numerous excavations. From 1993 to 2008 he was head of district archeology in the Kelheim district . From 1990 to 2005, Rind carried out a research project on the fortified hilltop settlement on Weltenburg Frauenberg ( small fort Weltenburg-Frauenberg ), the results of which were published in two monographs. From 1998 to 2008 he headed a DFG project in the Neolithic flint mine of Abensberg-Arnhofen . From 2006 to 2008 he was responsible for the “ Archäologiepark Altmühltal ” project funded by the EU . During his time as a local archaeologist in Lower Bavaria , he also designed numerous special archaeological exhibitions.

Since 2009, Rind has been employed as director of LWL archeology for Westphalia at the Westphalia-Lippe Regional Association. In addition to the archaeological preservation of monuments in the eastern part of North Rhine-Westphalia, he is responsible for the three archaeological museums of the LWL in Haltern, Herne and Paderborn.

From 1995 to 2008, Rind was given teaching positions at the University of Regensburg , the University of Bamberg and the University of Innsbruck . In February 2000 he completed his habilitation at the University of Regensburg with a thesis on "The fortified hilltop settlement on the Weltenburg Frauenberg and its importance in the settlement structure of the Central European Bronze Age". He then worked as a private lecturer at the University of Regensburg and, in 2002/03, took on a substitute professorship at the Chair for Prehistory . In the 2003/04 winter semester, Rind was visiting professor at the Institute for Pre- and Protohistory at the University of Vienna . In the 2006 summer semester he was appointed adjunct professor at the University of Regensburg. Since the winter semester 2010 he has been an adjunct professor at the University of Münster. Since 2012 he has been deputy chairman, since 2015 he has succeeded Jürgen Kunow as chairman of the Association of State Archaeologists , and since September 2013 he has been a member of the board of the German Association for Archeology (DVA). He has also been a member of the scientific advisory board of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Archaeological Prospection and Virtual Archeology since 2017 .

Rind has written eight monographs and over 150 articles. As editor he is responsible for several scientific series. His main research interests are the Neolithic mining and Bronze Age settlement archeology .
