Siegmar von Schnurbein

Siegmar Gottfried Markus Freiherr von Schnurbein (born October 31, 1941 in Blankenburg am Harz ) is a German provincial Roman archaeologist .

From 1963 to 1970 he studied Roman provincial archeology, prehistory and ancient history at the University of Tübingen and the University of Munich and received his doctorate in Munich in 1970 with a thesis on the Roman burial ground in Regensburg . He then worked at the Westphalian State Museum for Prehistory and Early History in Münster , where he processed the finds from the Roman camp in Haltern . Since 1978 Schnurbein was a member of the Roman-Germanic Commission of the German Archaeological Institute in Frankfurt am Main ; since 1981 as her second director, from 1990 until his retirement in 2006 as her first director. He completed his habilitation in 1981 at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt / Main, where he has been an adjunct professor since 1989.

In 1993, 1996 and 2000 Schnurbein was elected Chairman of the Presidium of the German Associations for Ancient Studies . In 2003 he was a founding member of the German Limes Commission .

He mainly deals with the archeology of the Germanic provinces of Rome and the Roman-Germanic contacts.

Honors

Schnurbein is a full member of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) and an honorary doctorate from the University of the West Timișoara and the University of Warsaw . In 1991 he was elected Corresponding Member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , in 1998 he was made a real member of the Austrian Archaeological Institute , and in 1999 he was made an Honorary Member of the Society of Antiquaries of London . In 2006 Schnurbein was honored with the Order of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany . He received the European Heritage Award in 2009 for his commitment to bringing together Europe's scientists. In 2014 Schnurbein was named Chevalier de l'ordre des Art et des Lettres for his remarkable work on the archaeological site of the Franco-German excavations in Alesia .
